HOW TO CREATE STYLE & WOW WHILE RENTING
1. GET PERMISSION
It goes without saying that before you do anything in a rental property you have to seek the permission of the landlord. Many tenants think landlords are a road block. It’s time to tip that common misconception on its head.
Many landlords are thrilled for the tenants to be making changes to their property as long as it is seen as adding value. As examples, a fresh coat of paint or even new window dressings are not out of the question. Talk to your landlord or property manager about what you want to do and why.
2. STYLE YOUR FURNITURE
If the landlord is not interested in you painting the living room your favourite shade of cerise, consider painting some key pieces of furniture. This will not only add splashes of colour but lets you take your colour and style with you when you next move.
3. RUG UP
It can be easy to forget that flooring provides the largest expanse of colour in a room, so any change will make a huge difference to the overall look and feel of your home. One of the easier ways to change the flooring is with an area rug!
4. WINDOW DRESS
Often the best solution for dingy curtains is to remove them altogether and let the light flood in. However, if privacy is an issue, or you prefer to control the amount of light coming in, consider carefully storing the existing curtains and replacing them with a simple Roman or Venetian blind. This way you can rehang the original curtains when you leave.
5. MIRROR, MIRROR
Mirrors are a decorating trick that work wonders. They reflect light and make a space feel bigger. Hang a large mirror in your dining space, living room, or bedroom across from a window, so it is in a prime position to receive natural light and reflect it back into the room.
6. REMEMBER WALLPAPER?
Don’t be afraid of wallpaper! Wallpaper is a great way to bring life to a room and there are some fabulous removable ones available.
7. LAYER AND LAYER
Even the oldest or the most plain sofa can look full of energy with some scatter cushions and throw rugs. Don’t be afraid to mix your colours and textures – it’s meant to be fun. It’s just like fashion – use those layers to create depth and personality.
8. PLAY WITH LIGHT
Set the mood and warm up your space. Lighting is crucial to making the space your own, functional and inviting. This is something that is easily achieved when renting. Look at some table lamps and floor lamps to warm your space and light darker areas without the need for the landlords approval or tradespeople.
Using just a few or all of these tips will help you make your rented space your own.
